The Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) aims to establish common EU rules for certifying carbon removals. Developing additional carbon removals is a worthwhile objective, but participation must remain voluntary. The forest-based bioeconomy depends on active and sustainable forest management, a predictable regulatory framework, and secure access to renewable raw materials. The Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF) should support these objectives and avoid creating new layers of complexity or unintended negative impacts on wood availability for example by introducing criteria for forest management.
FFIF key message:
CRCF must remain a voluntary instrument and should not be linked to climate framework obligations, KPIs or activity-based targets.
