Fossil emissions are the root cause of climate change. They need to be sharply reduced. Europe’s forest-based industries contribute significantly to the EU’s climate and energy transition by reducing fossil emissions, increasing the use of renewable energy and supporting industrial competitiveness.
The Finnish forest industry mills are forerunners in terms of their climate impact. While our energy production is already 92% renewable, the remaining fossil emissions, low as they may be, must be cut. Our fossil emissions could reach zero in as early as ten years. The Finnish forest industry seeks to work with the EU, Finnish government and other stakeholders to eliminate remaining fossil emissions and develop ways to capture, store and utilize bio-based carbon dioxide generated at the mills.
Forest industry plays an important role in the EU’s bioeconomy. Finland's forest industries provide solutions that can replace fossil-intensive products, store bio-based carbon, and meet the needs of consumers, industries, and society. Our industry delivers for example renewable construction materials, pulp for various end-use purposes, packaging materials, textiles, composites, tissue papers, baking and cooking papers, advanced biofuels, bio-based plastics, biochemicals, materials for automotive (e.g. fillers replacing rubbers and plastics) and side-streams for bioenergy production. The industry is continuously innovating.
